Home Care for a Healthy Smile

Strong oral hygiene habits at home are essential to maintaining not just a beautiful smile but your overall health as well. With a little daily dedication, you can help ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy for life.

Tooth Brushing

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled, ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is key. The most important times to brush are first thing in the morning and right before bed. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 2–3 months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. If you're unsure whether your brushing habits are as effective as they could be, your dentist or hygienist can provide guidance during your next visit.

A few quick brushing tips:

  • Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line and use gentle, circular motions.
  • Make sure to brush all surfaces, outer, inner, and chewing areas, of each tooth.
  • Use the tip of the brush to clean behind the front teeth.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Electric toothbrushes are a great option for many patients. They’re simple to use and can improve plaque removal with minimal effort. Gently guide the brush over each tooth and let the device do the work. Ask about recommended brushes or available products at your next visit.

Flossing

Daily flossing removes plaque and food particles that your toothbrush can’t reach, especially between teeth and under the gumline. This step is crucial to preventing cavities, gum disease, and bone loss over time.

For a better technique, try the following:

  • Use 12–16 inches of dental floss, wrapping most of it around your middle fingers and leaving about 2 inches to work with.
  • Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a sawing motion.
  • Curve the floss into a “C” shape and slide it under the gumline, then up and down along the side of each tooth.

Floss holders are a great alternative for those who have difficulty using traditional floss. These and other hygiene aids are often available through your dental office; just ask your provider for suggestions.

Rinsing

While it may feel natural to rinse after brushing, doing so can reduce the lasting benefits of fluoridated toothpaste. Skipping the rinse allows fluoride to remain on your teeth longer for added protection. If you use mouthwash, it’s best to check with your dentist or hygienist to ensure it’s appropriate for your needs. When brushing isn’t possible, rinsing with water after meals can help neutralize acids and reduce plaque buildup.

Effective home care routines make a big difference in your long-term oral health, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
